Safety Barriers for Aged Care Facilities

Aged care facilities have a responsibility that goes beyond standard workplace safety. Residents may have limited mobility, reduced awareness of their surroundings, and little ability to respond quickly to hazards. When vehicles, delivery trucks, and service equipment share the same spaces as residents and their families, the consequences of an uncontrolled incident can be severe.

Verge Safety Barriers works with aged care operators and facility managers across Australia to put the right physical controls in place. Protecting residents from vehicle movement, securing service areas, and helping facilities meet their WHS and duty of care obligations without disrupting the calm, welcoming environment residents deserve.

WHY AGED CARE FACILITIES NEED SAFETY BARRIERS

A Unique Duty of Care

Aged care facilities are simultaneously residential environments and busy operational sites. On any given day, the facility may see delivery vehicles at the loading dock, staff vehicles in the car park, maintenance crews servicing the grounds, mobility aids and wheelchairs moving through shared pathways, and family visitors navigating an unfamiliar site.

Unlike a standard workplace, the people most at risk in an aged care environment are not employees who have received safety inductions. They are residents who may have dementia, reduced mobility, or impaired vision, and who may not recognise or respond to vehicle hazards in time to protect themselves.

Australian WHS regulations and the Aged Care Quality Standards both require facility operators to identify and manage risks to the safety of residents, staff, and visitors. Physical barriers are one of the most reliable controls available. They work passively and permanently, without relying on residents or visitors to follow instructions or read signage.

KEY AGED CARE SAFETY ZONES

Where Verge Products Make the Biggest Impact

Car Parks and Drop-Off Areas

Family members and visitors are frequent users of aged care car parks, and drop-off areas near the facility entrance see a constant mix of passenger vehicles and pedestrians. Bollards and barriers define safe pedestrian paths, prevent vehicles from mounting kerbs, and protect building entries from accidental vehicle impact.

Loading Docks and Delivery Areas

Regular deliveries of food, medical supplies, linen, and equipment bring heavy vehicles into close proximity with staff and service areas. Dock gates and barriers create a controlled zone around the loading area, preventing unauthorised access and keeping delivery operations separate from resident pathways.

Outdoor Courtyards and Resident Walkways

Outdoor spaces are an important part of resident wellbeing, but they can also adjoin service roads or car parks. Barriers and bollards along the boundary between vehicle zones and resident outdoor areas provide a permanent, visible separation that protects residents enjoying outdoor spaces.

Service Corridors and Back-Of-House Areas

The operational back end of an aged care facility handles waste removal, linen, catering, and maintenance. These service corridors see trolleys, pallet jacks, and occasionally forklifts operating in tight spaces alongside staff. Barriers and column protectors define safe working zones and prevent equipment damage in these high-traffic areas.

Emergency and Ambulance Access Zones

Emergency vehicle access points need to remain clear at all times while also being protected from unauthorised parking or accidental obstruction. Bollards and boom gates manage access without blocking emergency routes, keeping these critical zones functional and compliant.

Building Perimeters and Entry Points

The main entrance of an aged care facility needs to feel welcoming while still providing protection from vehicle strike. Bollards and decorative barriers at building perimeters protect the structure and the people near it without creating an institutional or unwelcoming appearance.

CASE STUDIES

See Verge in Action for Healthcare and Community Environments

Wollongong Private Hospital NSW

Wollongong Private Hospital’s busy loading dock supported daily deliveries of medical supplies, equipment and waste removal. Open drop-offs on an elevated dock created fall risks for workers, delivery drivers and maintenance teams, with minimal edge protection in place. Verge installed the Dock-PRO Gate to provide full edge protection when dock doors were open or vehicles were absent. The lift-up mechanism required minimal effort, high-visibility yellow powder coating improved visibility in low-light conditions, and the installation was completed with minimal disruption to ongoing deliveries.

Hornsby Hospital NSW

Hornsby Hospital’s loading dock handled heavy traffic from a range of vehicle types, with limited space and unpredictable traffic flows making it difficult to maintain safety and efficiency simultaneously. The requirement was for unrestricted dock access without sacrificing pedestrian safety. Verge installed the Dock-PRO system, which accommodated diverse vehicles with its small footprint and lift-away design while maintaining clear pedestrian separation. The system significantly improved safety and operational efficiency across the healthcare loading dock environment.
