SAFETY BARRIERS FOR FUEL DEPOTS

Fuel depots are high-consequence environments where the protection of infrastructure is inseparable from the protection of people. Tanker trucks, pumps, storage tanks, and pipework operate in a setting where a vehicle strike on the wrong piece of infrastructure can have catastrophic consequences. Physical protection in a fuel depot is among the most critical safety infrastructure on any site.

Verge Safety Barriers works with fuel depot operators and bulk fuel distributors across Australia to put the right physical controls in place. Protecting tanks, pumps, and pipework from vehicle strikes, defining exclusion zones around high-risk infrastructure, and helping operators meet the demanding safety obligations of a fuel storage facility.

WHY FUEL DEPOTS NEED SAFETY BARRIERS

Where Asset Protection Is Life Safety

A fuel depot is an environment where the line between asset protection and life safety disappears. The infrastructure being protected, the tanks, pumps, and pipework, contains hazardous, flammable material. A vehicle strike that damages a tank or pipe is not just a costly repair, it is a potential ignition, spill, or environmental incident with consequences that extend far beyond the site.

Tanker trucks manoeuvre in confined loading and unloading areas, often reversing into position near critical infrastructure. The combination of large vehicles, tight spaces, and high-consequence infrastructure means that the physical barriers protecting that infrastructure are performing a life safety function, not just protecting an asset.

Australian WHS legislation, dangerous goods regulations, and environmental protection requirements all impose stringent obligations on fuel depot operators. Heavy-duty barriers and bollards around critical fuel infrastructure provide the robust physical protection these obligations require, protecting the infrastructure, the people, and the environment at the same time.

KEY FUEL DEPOT SAFETY ZONES

Where Verge Products Make The Biggest Impact

Storage Tanks and Bunded Areas

Storage tanks are the highest-consequence infrastructure on a fuel depot. Heavy-duty bollards and barriers around storage tanks and bunded areas provide robust protection from vehicle strike, preventing the catastrophic consequences of a tank breach and reinforcing the exclusion zones around the storage infrastructure.

Loading and Unloading Gantries

The loading and unloading gantries where tanker trucks connect to the depot infrastructure are points of intense vehicle activity around critical equipment. Bollards and barriers protect the gantry infrastructure from truck contact, define the truck positioning, and keep the loading equipment protected during the high-activity connection process.

Pumps and Pipework

Pumps and pipework distributed across the depot are vulnerable to vehicle contact and carry hazardous material. Bollards protect this infrastructure from accidental strike, preventing the leaks, spills, and ignition risks that follow damage to fuel system components.

Tanker Truck Routes and Manoeuvring Areas

The routes used by tanker trucks through the depot need clear definition to keep large vehicles away from critical infrastructure and personnel. HD Barriers and bollards define truck routes, protect adjacent infrastructure, and guide vehicles safely through the manoeuvring areas of the depot.

Pedestrian and Operator Zones

Operators and personnel work on foot around the depot infrastructure and tanker operations. Barriers and ECO-Rail define safe pedestrian zones and access routes, keeping personnel separated from tanker movement and protected as they work around the fuel infrastructure.

Site Entry and Access Control

The depot entry controls access to a high-security, high-consequence facility. Bollards, barriers, and boom gates manage vehicle access, protect the entry infrastructure, and enforce the controlled access that a fuel storage facility requires.

CASE STUDIES

See Verge In Action In High-Consequence Industrial Environments

Alstom Altona VIC

Alstom expanded their Australian operations with a new 7,500 sqm facility dedicated to storage and distribution of spare parts. As a global company with over 60,000 personnel and high standards for employee safety, Alstom required a complete safety barrier package prior to their go-live date. Verge consulted on the layout, manufactured and installed a full suite of standard and custom solutions within a short timeframe, including Driver Safety Zone Kits for visiting delivery drivers, Dock-PRO gates, Eco-Rail handrails, V-Gates and column protectors.

Boeing – Murarrie QLD

Boeing Distribution Services merged two warehouses into a new facility in Murarrie requiring safety barriers to separate a forklift order picking area from a hand-pick zone. The close proximity of the two zones required a solution that would protect staff without rigid steel barriers that could cause floor or equipment damage on impact. Verge, engaged through trading partner Shape Group, supplied and installed 64 lineal metres of Impact HDP Polymer Barrier in 1.5 weeks from first consultation to completed installation.

WHY CHOOSE VERGE FOR FUEL DEPOT SAFETY

Australian Made, High-Consequence Ready

Australian Made and Owned

Every Verge product is manufactured at our Glendenning, NSW facility, meaning faster delivery, local technical support, and products designed specifically for Australian conditions and compliance requirements.

Built To Protect Critical Infrastructure

At a fuel depot, the barrier protecting a tank or pump is protecting against consequences far greater than the cost of the equipment. Verge HD Barriers and heavy-duty bollards are engineered to absorb significant vehicle impact, providing the robust protection that high-consequence fuel infrastructure demands.

WHS Compliant

Verge products are designed to meet Australian Work Health and Safety standards, helping fuel depot operators document their hazard controls and demonstrate duty of care alongside their dangerous goods and environmental obligations.

Built For Tough Conditions

Fuel depots are demanding outdoor environments. Verge products are manufactured from galvanised and powder-coated steel that withstands these conditions over the long term without constant maintenance.

Fast Lead Times

Local manufacturing means we can respond quickly when critical infrastructure needs protection, without waiting on international supply chains or extended lead times.

PROTECT YOUR FUEL DEPOT WITH VERGE SAFETY BARRIERS

Every fuel depot has a different layout, infrastructure configuration, and access requirement. Whether you need to protect storage tanks, secure loading gantries, or define tanker routes, Verge can help you find the right solution.
