SAFETY BARRIERS FOR SOLAR FARMS

Solar farms are large-scale electrical infrastructure spread across vast sites, with maintenance vehicles, equipment, and personnel moving among high-value, sensitive electrical components. Inverters, transformers, and switchgear represent significant investment and serious electrical hazards, and they need protection from vehicle contact while remaining accessible for maintenance.

Verge Safety Barriers works with solar farm operators and renewable energy developers across Australia to put the right physical controls in place. Protecting critical electrical infrastructure from vehicle strike, defining access and exclusion zones, and helping operators manage the safety and asset protection challenges of a large-scale solar installation.

WHY SOLAR FARMS NEED SAFETY BARRIERS

High-Value Infrastructure Across A Large Site

A utility-scale solar farm combines high-value electrical equipment with the operational reality of a large outdoor site that requires regular vehicle access for maintenance, cleaning, and inspection. Maintenance vehicles move along access tracks between rows of panels. Equipment is moved to and from inverter and transformer stations. And personnel work around electrical infrastructure that carries serious hazards.

The risk is twofold. There is the safety risk to personnel working around high-voltage equipment and moving vehicles, and there is the asset protection risk to infrastructure that is expensive to repair and critical to the farm’s output. A vehicle striking an inverter or transformer station can cause significant damage, take generation capacity offline, and create a serious electrical hazard.

Australian WHS legislation and electrical safety requirements both impose obligations on solar farm operators to manage these risks. Physical barriers protect the critical infrastructure from vehicle contact, define exclusion zones around electrical equipment, and create the controlled access that a large-scale electrical installation requires.

KEY SOLAR FARM SAFETY ZONES

Where Verge Products Make The Biggest Impact

Inverter and Transformer Stations

Inverter and transformer stations are the highest-value, highest-hazard points on a solar farm. Bollards and barriers around these stations protect the equipment from vehicle contact during maintenance access, and define a clear exclusion zone that keeps vehicles at a safe distance from the electrical infrastructure.

Switchgear and Electrical Enclosures

Switchgear and electrical enclosures distributed across the site are vulnerable to vehicle contact from maintenance and inspection vehicles. Bollards protect these enclosures from accidental strike, preventing damage to critical electrical components and the hazards that follow.

Access Tracks and Vehicle Routes

The access tracks between panel rows carry maintenance and inspection vehicles across the site. Barriers and bollards at key points define vehicle routes, protect adjacent infrastructure, and prevent vehicles from straying into areas where they could damage equipment or create a hazard.

Site Compound and Control Building

The site compound and control building house monitoring, control, and maintenance facilities. Bollards and barriers protect these structures from vehicle contact, define safe pedestrian zones around the compound, and control vehicle access to the operational heart of the farm.

Battery Storage and BESS Areas

Solar farms with battery energy storage systems have additional high-value, high-hazard infrastructure that requires protection. Bollards and barriers around battery storage enclosures protect the equipment from vehicle contact and enforce the exclusion zones required around energy storage systems.

Substation and Grid Connection Points

The substation and grid connection point is critical infrastructure where the farm connects to the network. Heavy-duty bollards and barriers protect this infrastructure from vehicle strike, providing robust protection for the equipment that the entire farm's output depends on.

CASE STUDIES

See Verge In Action In Industrial And Infrastructure Environments

Alstom Altona VIC

Alstom expanded their Australian operations with a new 7,500 sqm facility dedicated to storage and distribution of spare parts. As a global company with over 60,000 personnel and high standards for employee safety, Alstom required a complete safety barrier package prior to their go-live date. Verge consulted on the layout, manufactured and installed a full suite of standard and custom solutions within a short timeframe, including Driver Safety Zone Kits for visiting delivery drivers, Dock-PRO gates, Eco-Rail handrails, V-Gates and column protectors.

Boeing – Murarrie QLD

Boeing Distribution Services merged two warehouses into a new facility in Murarrie requiring safety barriers to separate a forklift order picking area from a hand-pick zone. The close proximity of the two zones required a solution that would protect staff without rigid steel barriers that could cause floor or equipment damage on impact. Verge, engaged through trading partner Shape Group, supplied and installed 64 lineal metres of Impact HDP Polymer Barrier in 1.5 weeks from first consultation to completed installation.

WHY CHOOSE VERGE FOR SOLAR FARM SAFETY

Australian Made, Infrastructure Ready

Australian Made and Owned

Every Verge product is manufactured at our Glendenning, NSW facility, meaning faster delivery, local technical support, and products designed specifically for Australian conditions and compliance requirements.

Protects High-Value Electrical Assets

A single vehicle strike on an inverter or transformer can take generation capacity offline and cost far more than the protection that would have prevented it. Verge bollards and barriers protect critical electrical infrastructure from vehicle contact, safeguarding both the asset and the farm's output.

WHS Compliant

Verge products are designed to meet Australian Work Health and Safety standards, helping solar farm operators document their hazard controls and demonstrate duty of care around electrical infrastructure.

Built For Outdoor Conditions

Solar farms are exposed to full sun, weather, and dust across large open sites. Verge products are manufactured from galvanised and powder-coated steel that withstands these conditions over the long operational life of a solar installation.

Fast Lead Times

Local manufacturing means we can respond quickly when infrastructure needs protection across a large site, without waiting on international supply chains or extended lead times.

PROTECT YOUR SOLAR FARM WITH VERGE SAFETY BARRIERS

Every solar farm has a different layout, infrastructure configuration, and access pattern. Whether you need to protect inverter stations, define access routes, or secure a substation, Verge can help you find the right solution.
