SAFETY BARRIERS FOR GRAIN TERMINALS

Grain terminals are high-volume material handling facilities where trucks, conveyors, augers, and heavy machinery move enormous quantities of grain through receival, storage, and dispatch. The seasonal peaks of harvest concentrate intense vehicle and machinery activity into tight windows, and workers operate on foot around heavy vehicles and powerful handling equipment throughout.

Verge Safety Barriers works with grain terminal and bulk handling operators across Australia to put the right physical controls in place. Separating workers from truck and machinery movement, protecting handling infrastructure, and helping operators manage safety through the intense activity of harvest and beyond.

WHY GRAIN TERMINALS NEED SAFETY BARRIERS

Seasonal Intensity And Heavy Material Handling

A grain terminal operates in cycles of intense activity. During harvest, trucks queue and tip continuously, conveyors and augers run at capacity, and the site operates at maximum throughput often around the clock. This concentration of heavy vehicle and machinery activity into peak periods creates a high-risk environment where the pressure to keep grain moving can compromise safety.

The hazards are significant. Trucks reverse to tipping points, augers and conveyors present serious entanglement and contact risks, and workers move on foot around this heavy machinery and vehicle movement. The dusty conditions of a grain terminal further limit visibility and awareness. And seasonal and casual workers brought on for harvest may have limited familiarity with the site.

Australian WHS legislation requires grain terminal operators to control these hazards with effective physical measures. Barriers and bollards define vehicle and machinery zones, protect handling infrastructure, and create the worker protection that is critical when the site is running at peak intensity with a partly unfamiliar workforce.

KEY GRAIN TERMINAL SAFETY ZONES

Where Verge Products Make The Biggest Impact

Truck Receival and Tipping Areas

The receival area sees trucks queuing and reversing to tipping points in a continuous cycle during harvest. Barriers and bollards define the truck path and tipping positions, protect the receival infrastructure from truck contact, and keep workers separated from the reversing vehicles in the receival zone.

Conveyor and Auger Routes

Conveyors and augers present serious contact and entanglement hazards as they move grain through the terminal. Barriers and bollards define exclusion zones around this equipment, keeping workers at a safe distance from the moving machinery and protecting the equipment from vehicle contact.

Silo and Storage Areas

The silos and storage structures are the core infrastructure of a grain terminal. Bollards and barriers protect silo bases and storage structures from vehicle and machinery contact, preventing damage to the critical storage infrastructure the terminal depends on.

Loadout and Dispatch Areas

The loadout area handles outbound grain onto trucks and rail, with vehicles and machinery operating in a defined dispatch zone. Barriers and bollards define safe zones around loadout, protect infrastructure, and keep workers separated from the vehicle and machinery movement during dispatch.

Worker Access and Pedestrian Routes

Workers need protected routes around the terminal that keep them clear of truck and machinery movement. ECO-Rail and barriers define pedestrian walkways and access routes, creating safe paths through a site dominated by heavy vehicle and material handling activity.

Site Entry and Weighbridge

The site entry and weighbridge manage the constant flow of trucks during peak periods. Bollards and barriers guide trucks through the weighbridge, protect the entry and weighbridge infrastructure, and define a controlled approach that manages the truck flow safely.

CASE STUDIES

See Verge In Action In Heavy Industrial And Bulk Handling Environments

Alstom Altona VIC

Alstom expanded their Australian operations with a new 7,500 sqm facility dedicated to storage and distribution of spare parts. As a global company with over 60,000 personnel and high standards for employee safety, Alstom required a complete safety barrier package prior to their go-live date. Verge consulted on the layout, manufactured and installed a full suite of standard and custom solutions within a short timeframe, including Driver Safety Zone Kits for visiting delivery drivers, Dock-PRO gates, Eco-Rail handrails, V-Gates and column protectors.

Opal Botany Bay

Opal’s warehouse stored bulk paper rolls weighing up to 3,500 kg, stacked three and four levels high in an area adjacent to a truck driver safe zone. The risk of a roll toppling into the driver zone created a potential crush injury hazard. After evaluating options including reducing stack heights (which would have cost valuable warehouse capacity), Verge designed and constructed a 7-metre high topple barrier 14.5 metres long using the Hy-Wall system. The structure was erected in 1.5 days with minimal disruption. Both the warehouse capacity and driver safety zone were preserved.

WHY CHOOSE VERGE FOR GRAIN TERMINAL SAFETY

Australian Made, Harvest Ready

Australian Made and Owned

Every Verge product is manufactured at our Glendenning, NSW facility, meaning faster delivery, local technical support, and products designed specifically for Australian conditions and WHS compliance requirements.

Built For Bulk Handling Conditions

Grain terminals are dusty, abrasive, high-throughput environments. Verge products are manufactured from galvanised and powder-coated steel that withstands these conditions and the heavy vehicle and machinery contact of a bulk handling operation.

WHS Compliant

Verge products are designed to meet Australian Work Health and Safety standards, helping grain terminal operators document their hazard controls and demonstrate duty of care, particularly important when managing seasonal and casual harvest workers.

Modular And Relocatable

Grain terminal layouts and throughput change between seasons and as the operation grows. Verge's modular product range can be reconfigured, relocated, and extended as needs evolve, without replacing existing infrastructure.

Fast Lead Times

Local manufacturing means we can respond quickly ahead of harvest or when a safety gap needs to be addressed, without waiting on international supply chains or extended lead times.

PROTECT YOUR GRAIN TERMINAL WITH VERGE SAFETY BARRIERS

Every grain terminal has a different layout, throughput, and handling configuration. Whether you need to define truck receival paths, create exclusion zones around conveyors, or protect silo infrastructure, Verge can help you find the right solution.
