Case Study: Full Metalworks and Internal Barrier Fitout for a New Distribution Centre

Overview

A national construction contractor was delivering a new distribution facility at Edinburgh, South Australia, for a global logistics tenant. They needed one supplier who could handle both the external metalworks package and the internal barrier fitout, rather than splitting the work across several trades.

The Challenge

Fitting out a distribution centre means two separate protection problems, and most suppliers only solve one of them.

Outside, the builder needed bollards, Armco and downpipe protectors as part of the metalworks package. Inside, the incoming tenant needed a barrier system that could stand up to constant forklift traffic and keep pedestrians safe from day one of operations.

Coordinating two suppliers across those scopes adds cost, adds programme risk and leaves gaps where the external and internal packages meet. The builder wanted a single partner who could cover both.

The tenant had already specified Verge on previous sites. With Verge on site for the metalworks package, signing off on the internal barrier fitout was a straightforward call.

The Solution

Verge delivered a complete supply and install package, with installation carried out in a number of stages over a 5 week period.

The external scope covered bollards, Armco and downpipe protection across the site. Internally, the barrier system was laid out around pedestrian walkways, materials handling routes and the charging area, with 30 custom MHE charging stands built to suit the tenant’s fleet.

The Outcome

Every pedestrian walkway in the facility is now protected by a forklift rated barrier.

For a site with the forklift traffic volumes this facility runs, that is the difference between a walkway line painted on the floor and a physical barrier that stops a machine. Pedestrians and plant equipment are properly separated, and the tenant took occupancy with the protection already in place rather than retrofitting it around live operations.
