Safety Barriers for Loading Docks

The loading dock is the most hazardous point in any warehouse or distribution facility. It is where heavy vehicles, forklifts, and pedestrians converge, often under time pressure, in low light, with the dock edge just metres away.

Verge Safety Barriers designs and manufactures Australian-made safety products specifically for loading dock environments. Whether you are managing a single dock or a multi-bay distribution centre, we can help you protect your workers, your infrastructure, and your WHS compliance obligations.

WHY LOADING DOCKS NEED SAFETY BARRIERS

The Risks are Real and Well Documented

Loading docks account for a disproportionate share of serious workplace injuries in Australian warehousing and logistics. The hazards are predictable: workers on foot sharing space with reversing trucks, dock edges without adequate fall protection, forklifts crossing pedestrian paths, and vehicles striking infrastructure during the loading process.

Australian WHS regulations require facility operators to identify and eliminate or minimise these risks. Physical barriers are one of the most effective controls available. They separate people from vehicles, protect the dock edge from falls, and prevent costly impact damage to doors, walls, and dock equipment.

Verge products are designed for this environment. They handle the impact loads of forklift operations, withstand the daily wear of a working dock, and install without major structural modifications to your facility.

KEY LOADING DOCK SAFETY ZONES

Where Verge Products Make The Biggest Impact

Dock Edge and Dock Leveller Surrounds

An unprotected dock face is one of the most serious fall hazards in any facility. Dock-PRO gates close off the open dock edge when a truck is not present, preventing workers and forklifts from going over the edge during loading and unloading operations.

Pedestrian Crossing Points

Where foot traffic intersects with forklift lanes near the dock, the risk of a pedestrian being struck is high. Barriers and bollards create a defined crossing point that separates workers on foot from moving vehicles and makes the safe path through the dock area clear.

Truck Approach and Reversing Zones

Reversing trucks have significant blind spots and limited manoeuvrability. Bollards and barriers along the truck approach zone guide vehicles onto the correct path, protect adjacent infrastructure, and prevent overruns into areas where workers or equipment may be present.

Dock Door Openings

Roller doors and overhead door frames take repeated impact from forklifts manoeuvring through the dock opening. Overhead door protectors and column guards absorb these impacts before they cause structural damage, extending the life of the door and the surrounding structure.

Internal Staging Areas

The area immediately inside the dock where pallets are staged and sorted is a high-traffic zone for both forklifts and workers. HD Barriers create a clear separation between the staging lane and storage racking, reducing the risk of racking impact and keeping workers out of the forklift path.

Column and Wall Protection

In multi-bay dock environments, structural columns near traffic lanes are vulnerable to repeated forklift impact. Column protectors and wall guards absorb this damage before it reaches the structure, reducing repair costs and preventing the kind of cumulative damage that can compromise building integrity over time.

CASE STUDIES

Trusted For Australian Loading Docks

Interior of a new cold storage facility

McNab built a new refrigerated distribution centre featuring multiple loading docks with a concrete step-down design that created fall hazards internally and vehicle separation challenges externally. Verge specified Guard Pro with integrated handrail along the full length of the internal dock face, 93 lineal metres internally and 136 lineal metres externally around the building perimeter. Custom-fabricated handrail sections were manufactured to match the Guard Pro height, creating a continuous, uniform barrier line with no visual break. Eight pedestrian gates and eight custom access stairs were also installed for safe, controlled access between dock and storage levels. The full system was finished in Verge safety yellow powdercoat over Hot Dip Galv for durability in the cold storage environment.

Mainfreight – Moorebank NSW

One of the busiest logistics depots in Australia needed physical separation between staff and forklifts across a large portion of their distribution centre, without slowing operations. Verge designed and installed a Green Zone pedestrian system using 410 lineal metres of HDP barrier, creating clearly defined safe walkways. Twenty-five inward-opening self-closing pedestrian gates were placed at crossing points to prompt people to stop and check before entering forklift zones. Column protectors and expanding barriers completed the fit-out. The facility now has clear visual and physical separation across all movement zones.

Wollongong Private Hospital NSW

Wollongong Private Hospital’s busy loading dock supported daily deliveries of medical supplies, equipment and waste removal. Open drop-offs on an elevated dock created fall risks for workers, delivery drivers and maintenance teams, with minimal edge protection in place. Verge installed the Dock-PRO Gate to provide full edge protection when dock doors were open or vehicles were absent. The lift-up mechanism required minimal effort, high-visibility yellow powder coating improved visibility in low-light conditions, and the installation was completed with minimal disruption to ongoing deliveries.

Australia Post – Blacktown NSW

Australia Post’s Blacktown parcel distribution facility needed to safely stack stillages up to four high in selected warehouse zones. Without adequate containment, the stacking created safety risks and restricted available floor space. Verge installed a tiered system of Impact polymer barriers: Medium Duty Barrier to separate pedestrian walkways from forklift zones, 2-metre Hy-Wall for controlled containment of lower stacks, and 4-metre Hy-Wall to enable secure high-bay storage. The 4-metre barriers prevented toppling risk and unlocked over 25% more usable floor area across the facility.

Hornsby Hospital NSW

Hornsby Hospital’s loading dock handled heavy traffic from a range of vehicle types, with limited space and unpredictable traffic flows making it difficult to maintain safety and efficiency simultaneously. The requirement was for unrestricted dock access without sacrificing pedestrian safety. Verge installed the Dock-PRO system, which accommodated diverse vehicles with its small footprint and lift-away design while maintaining clear pedestrian separation. The system significantly improved safety and operational efficiency across the healthcare loading dock environment.

Brookfield Sydney NSW

Brookfield invested in Verge loading dock safety gates at their Sydney facility following heightened legislative focus on loading dock safety. Verge supplied and installed the Dock-PRO system to protect personnel at the loading dock area, delivering a significant improvement in pedestrian safety at one of Australia’s leading property groups.

Marrickville Metro – NSW

Recent changes to loading dock safety legislation prompted the GPT Group to invest in dock safety at Marrickville Metro. Floor space at the loading dock was extremely tight, and GPT required a solution that would not reduce operational capacity. Verge’s Dock-PRO range provided complete fall protection through its effortless lift-up design, allowing the full dock face to remain operational while ensuring compliance with current safety regulations. The installation delivered dock safety without sacrificing any operational space.

Australia Post – Melbourne Gateway Facility

Australia Post’s Melbourne Gateway Facility operated 24 hours a day processing domestic and international mail, with a requirement to safely compound ULD stillages stacked four to five high while protecting pedestrians throughout. Verge was engaged during the initial design phase by Gray Pucksand Architecture and developed the concept for a 5.5-metre Hy-Wall barrier as part of the collaboration. The solution required the structure to withstand a 7 km/h forklift impact and contain ULD stillages in the event of toppling. Verge managed the complete design and construction working with FDC Constructions.
