Safety Barriers For Logistics Businesses

Logistics businesses operate under constant pressure. Trucks need to be turned around, freight needs to move, forklifts are running across multiple shifts, and workers are navigating the same floor as heavy vehicles all day long. When the pace is this high, the risk of a serious incident is real and ongoing.

Verge Safety Barriers works with logistics operators across Australia, from national freight networks to regional distribution businesses, to put permanent physical safety systems in place. Systems that keep workers separated from vehicles, protect infrastructure from daily impact, and hold up under the conditions of a facility that never really stops.

WHY LOGISTICS BUSINESSES NEED SAFETY BARRIERS

The Pace Of Logistics Creates Structural Risk

The safety challenge in logistics is not just about individual hazards. It is about what happens when high traffic volume, time pressure, shift changeovers, and visiting contractors all converge in the same operational space every single day.

Forklift operators know the site. Delivery drivers often do not. New staff are inducted quickly and move into live environments. Contractors arrive with no site knowledge at all. In this environment, procedural safety controls break down quickly. Signs get ignored, painted lines get crossed, and the near misses accumulate until something goes wrong.

Australian WHS legislation requires logistics operators to implement physical controls that work independently of human behaviour. Barriers, gates, bollards, and defined zones provide the permanent separation that keeps working regardless of who is on site, how experienced they are, or how much pressure the operation is under.

KEY LOGISTICS SAFETY ZONES

Where Verge Products Make The Biggest Impact

Depot Floors and Forklift Corridors

A busy logistics depot floor sees forklifts, reach trucks, and pedestrians sharing space continuously across every shift. HD Barriers and ECO-Rail create permanent forklift corridors and pedestrian laneways that separate these movements and keep workers physically protected from vehicle traffic regardless of operational tempo.

Loading Docks and Truck Bays

Loading docks are the convergence point of trucks, forklifts, and dock workers, often in low light and under tight turnaround pressure. Dock-PRO gates close off the open dock face between arrivals, while barriers and bollards define safe zones around the receiving area and prevent forklifts from entering pedestrian areas during loading and unloading.

Container Yards and External Marshalling Areas

Container yards and truck marshalling areas see heavy vehicles manoeuvring in open spaces where workers on foot are also present. Bollards, guardrail, and defined pedestrian exclusion zones protect workers in these external areas, particularly around container handling equipment and at pedestrian access points to the yard.

Driver Safety Zones

Visiting delivery drivers are among the least site-familiar people in any logistics facility. The Verge Driver Safety Zone Kit provides a clearly marked, physically protected waiting area for drivers while their vehicle is being loaded or unloaded, removing them from the active vehicle zone and addressing one of the most frequently overlooked hazards in logistics operations.

Pedestrian Crossing Points and Intersection Zones

Where pedestrian routes cross forklift or vehicle lanes, the risk of a collision is highest. Self-closing pedestrian gates at crossing points create a deliberate pause in pedestrian movement, prompting workers to stop and check before stepping into a vehicle lane, regardless of how familiar they are with the site.

Column, Rack, and Infrastructure Protection

In high-density logistics facilities, structural columns, racking systems, and fixed infrastructure take constant low-speed impact from forklifts manoeuvring in tight spaces. Column protectors, Rack-PRO end guards, and wall protection prevent cumulative structural damage that can compromise facility integrity and create significant repair costs over time.

CASE STUDIES

Trusted By Australian Logistics Operators

new distribution centre, ravenhall vic

A new distribution centre at Ravenhall was four weeks from going live and needed barrier protection across the entire facility, with high forklift traffic requiring impact rated products throughout. Verge supplied and installed 220 metres of HD Barrier at 1000mm height, 45 gates, 100 metres of V-Stop floor angle and ECO-Rail through the pedestrian areas. The loading docks required a custom Dock-PRO gate system, designed and manufactured to suit the site. The facility opened on schedule with full protection in place, and Verge has since been named preferred supplier.

Mainfreight – Moorebank NSW

One of the busiest logistics depots in Australia needed physical separation between staff and forklifts across a large portion of their distribution centre, without slowing operations. Verge designed and installed a Green Zone pedestrian system using 410 lineal metres of HDP barrier, creating clearly defined safe walkways. Twenty-five inward-opening self-closing pedestrian gates were placed at crossing points to prompt people to stop and check before entering forklift zones. Column protectors and expanding barriers completed the fit-out. The facility now has clear visual and physical separation across all movement zones.

Qube Logistics – Moorebank NSW

Qube Logistics completed a full safety upgrade at their 28,000 m2 intermodal facility in Moorebank, one of Australia’s busiest freight hubs with continuous movement of containers, forklifts and heavy vehicles. Verge installed over 600 metres of HD polymer barrier to define movement zones, along with Hy-Wall systems and Vivid V-Gates with integrated audio alerts at key intersections. Polymer barriers were chosen over conventional materials for their ability to absorb impact and return to shape without rusting or cracking. The project was delivered from first enquiry to full installation in under six weeks.

Martin Brower – Karawatha QLD

Martin Brower, a supply chain provider for fast food restaurants, needed to manage high volumes of vehicle, MHE and pedestrian traffic across their new Brisbane distribution centre. Verge partnered with Vaughan Constructions to supply and install a full safety barrier package. HD Barrier protected all internal pedestrian walkways, Double Guard-Pro provided asset protection at external boundaries and heavy vehicle areas, V-Gates managed pedestrian safety at all MHE crossover points, and steel overhead door protectors extended the lifespan of internal rapid doors.

Australian Leading Freight Provider

One of Australia’s leading freight and logistics providers needed premium pedestrian protection across a newly built 3PL facility in Sydney with high volumes of vehicle, MHE and pedestrian movements. Verge consultants worked closely with the operations team to minimise crossovers and maximise space utilisation across both ground and mezzanine levels. The Impact HDP Polymer Barrier was chosen for its durability and low maintenance, with the full solution supplied and installed ahead of the site go-live date.

CHEP Australia | Redbank QLD – Pallet Supply Chain

A leading pallet supply chain and logistics company introduced strict safety protocols at their busy transport yard after identifying significant risks from forklifts operating with oversized loads, double pallet stacks two wide by ten high. The new policy restricted pedestrian access to forklift zones, requiring physical separation to make it effective. Verge supplied and installed a mixed system of Eco-Rail, Mesh Hy-Wall, HD Barrier, V-Gates and Dock-Pro Gates to create a secure perimeter around pedestrian walkways while allowing full-height pallet stacking to continue without restriction.

Maersk Arndell Park NSW

Maersk invested in Verge Safety Barriers at their Arndell Park facility to improve pedestrian and forklift segregation and protect assets from damage. The project demonstrated Maersk’s commitment to safeguarding their workforce and the facility infrastructure. Verge was selected as an Australian Made solution provider, with certified products delivering consistent quality, short lead times and local support. The installation marks a significant step forward in safety standards at the site.
